“Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.”
~Omar Khayyam
“I’ll be happy when I get that promotion.”
“It’ll be good when the project is completed.”
“I can rest and enjoy when I’m better at…”
As Executive Coaches, I think we’ve heard them all. The “as soon as…” statements that we use to promise ourselves that we’ll be satisfied “when.”
The problem with “as soon as” is that it can rob us of today. It can rob us of enjoying our current role in our team or with our customers. Of seeing all our accomplishments as opposed to what we haven’t yet done. Of being happy with this moment, because in many ways, this moment is all we have.
Research shows that when we focus on what’s gone well, or what we’re grateful for, it opens our peripheral vision to see more around us and attunes our brains to possibilities. When we acknowledge what we’ve done to make things happen – what we’ve achieved so far and how we’ve had impact on the good things around us – it increases our sense of agency, which fuels us to solve more problems and complete more projects.
There is much in the world these days that is painful and awful. The levels of uncertainty and chaos we’re experiencing is unfathomable at times.
And when we still find what to be happy for in this moment – what we’ve done, who we’re surrounded by, what’s beautiful – we fuel ourselves to move through this uncertainty with more grace and humanity.
We fuel ourselves to live this moment, because it is our lives.
How do you choose to be happy in this moment?
