“It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end.” Ursula LeGuin
One of my former colleagues is extremely focused on getting his next promotion. Every time we speak, that is the main topic of conversation. On its face, there is nothing wrong with that, but my sense is that all that matters to him is getting the promotion, not what the new job will be and not what’s happening around him now as he waits. Once he receives the promotion he’ll have to live in that job every day… and we never discuss if it will be a job that he will like, and we certainly never discuss how to make his current job more fulfilling. It’s like the person who is so focused on their big wedding that they forget about the lifelong marriage to follow and miss the daily moments of joy with their beloved.

I am a person who finds meaning in small things and who looks for reasons to be inspired and motivated when I might not be. Who tries to live my life with gusto. And I’ve found all this in my yellow birds.
There seems to be a family of gorgeous little yellow birds that live near my house. Every time I see one fly by, I somehow know that all is well and everything will work out. I feel connected with the universe and aware of only good. I see the best in myself, in the people who work for and live with me, in my business projects and home responsibilities. The only problem with this is that when I don’t see my yellow birds I start to worry that somehow things aren’t okay, or that I’m not okay. I let my inner critic speak fearfully to me and I feel not in my best space – not able to lead, not able to effectively connect with others. Just down.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” William Butler Yeats
How do you share information and pass on knowledge? If you’re like most people, you communicate as much as you can in as short a period of time as you can, and then consider the job done. In keeping with today’s high-tech society, we download. More often than not, that simply doesn’t work.
Pouring information into the minds of others does not guarantee that they will understand, learn, or use what we’ve given them. People must be energized and excited by the information in order to truly incorporate it. They need to feel an inner need to learn more, know more, and do more. Unfortunately, we often forget this in all aspects of our lives – as managers, teachers, colleagues, parents, etc.

“In the midst of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.” Albert Camus
There are many sayings that highlight the fact that adversity can often yield the best results. “You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.” “Diamonds are made under pressure.” “Every cloud has a silver lining.” These all remind us that it is often the difficult times that bring out the best in us or get us where we need to go.

At the age of 61, former long distance swim champion Diana Nyad just attempted a feat that no one else has ever completed – a 103-mile, 60-hour swim from Havana, Cuba, to Key West, Florida. In watching and reading news accounts about her historic effort, I am reminded of what helps anyone succeed in going for their dreams and goals:

“If you work on your mind with your mind, how can you avoid an immense confusion?” Seng-ts’an
We often get caught in our own minds trying to find a way out of a problem. Like an animal caught in a maze, or perhaps a gerbil going round and round in its little wheel, we circle through our repetitive thoughts trying to find a solution to what’s in front of us.

So many people wonder if they can really make a difference. “That will never work here,” our clients often say. “No one else is doing it,” or “My boss won’t go along with that.” We challenge them to be do it anyway, to be a change agent, to be the first one.

“Dance as if no one were watching. Sing as if no one were listening. And live each day as if it were your last.” Irish ProverbLife is too short not to enjoy it. So often we are caught up in what needs to get done or what people will think of us. It’s not worth it. The truth is that any day on this earth might be your last – so why not make the most of each day that’s been gifted to you?
