To grow as a leader, or in any endeavor, it is essential to build upon your strengths. And in order to do that, you must be aware of your strengths – the specific things that make you you, that make you great, and that make you good at what you do. This awareness is something many of us have trouble identifying and embracing.
A great way to find your strengths is to do some research. To spend time in reflection; to look around you and notice what you love, what you excel at, where you truly shine. Your research should include asking others – to reach out to those people who know you really well and ask them to notice and to list the best things that make you you. Noticing the strengths in others, and contemplating which of those you might also possess, is another way to find your strengths.

Life gets very, very busy – and as we all get more self-involved and spend our time reacting to the tasks in front of us, we forget a true essence of life. Human connection. We become “doers” – getting things done, crossing things off of our check-list, taking care of the business at hand, answering our emails, checking our BlackBerrys, rushing to finish tasks and move on.

We have been taught since we were young, “No pain, no gain.” I no longer adhere to that approach.
The world is filled with organisms that grow without pain and chaos. People grow, cities grow, businesses grow, flowers grow – all, at times, without chaos and pain. The world shows us that it is entirely possible, and yet when I share this concept with my clients, they find it enlightening.

It’s that time of year. The weather is (finally) cold, at least here in the mid-Atlantic states. The holiday season is officially over. The gym is more crowded than usual at 5:30 in the morning. A new year is here.
Everyone is friendlier during the change of years. People I don’t usually talk with are wishing me a “Happy New Year.” People I talk with but don’t know that well are offering me hugs. And everyone is asking me what my New Year’s resolutions are.

One of the true gifts of my profession is witnessing clients have an “aha” moment. You see the realization hit them as they recognize a self-defeating pattern they’ve repeated over and over…and then devise a plan to break the pattern, or grasp the negative self-talk that they’ve engaged in for years…and begin to question that self-talk and believe a different truth, or acknowledge the rightness of many of their gut instincts…and begin to trust themselves and their leadership more than they ever have before. There often is a pause in our conversation, a moment when they reflect, a silence as they internalize, and then they emerge from their contemplation with a newfound strength that is palpable. And engaging.

Recently I took a month off from work. I shut off my computer, cleaned up my office, forwarded my phone, let clients know I’d be away for a month, and stopped. My intention was to simply become more of a “human being” rather than a “human doing,” as well as to enjoy being a stay-at-home mom with my son’s last summer before kindergarten.
