“If you can dream it, you can do it.”~Walt Disney
In so many ways, we are surrounded by adages that urge us onward and upward. “The sky is the limit.” “Reach for the stars.” “If you build it, they will come.” Yet we rarely see these ideas as true for us. We hold back from going for all that we want, or from believing that we can have it or achieve it.
I’ve listened to many clients share dreams that they’ve long avoided, put off, or ignored. With the proper urging (or challenge) to put their attention, focus, and efforts behind that which they claim to want, many of them go on to achieve what they’ve longed for. They receive the promotion; start the company; publish the book; negotiate the work/life balance; conquer their inner demons to move ahead; build their ideal team; establish their nonprofit; buy a home – their dreams becomes reality.
The first step is to allow yourself to dream – and to enjoy what you’re dreaming about. To get deep in the details and excited about the possibilities. The next step is to truly believe that all, including this, is possible. Maybe it’s posting a picture of the goal or dream on your mirror or at your desk. Or committing to tell your family and friends about it. Anything that helps you to move beyond “what could be” to “what will be.” The third step is to identify and remove the obstacles we often place in our own way – your negative thoughts, procrastination, self-sabotage, false beliefs, etc. Then, and only then, the next step is to take the actual actions that will move you towards your dream – have the conversations, learn the skills, block off the time, save the money.
With your dream in your head, belief in your heart, and obstacles out of your way, step by step move yourself towards your goal. You can do it.
Take time to get clear on what you want, and how you can get there. Now do it.
What is your dream? Have can you believe in it more? What do you need to do to achieve it?
