What’s Mensch-ness got to do with leadership?

Posted by Lisa Kohn on February 4, 2011

I used to not understand the value of the word “mensch” – until I married one. Mensch is a Yiddish word that means “a decent, upright, responsible person,” or “a person of strength and honor.” Basically it’s someone who is good, kind, and always does the right thing to make others feel welcomed, loved (even in the business sense), and appreciated. So, needless to say, I was intrigued to learn more about a book, which looks at how mensch-ness (my word) can be a leadership strength.

In this blog post, Twelve Resolutions on How to Be a Mensch, Guy Kawasaki shares his view of Bruna Martinuzzi’s book, The Leader as a Mensch: Become the Kind of Person Others Want to Follow and offers twelve New Year’s resolutions to make you a mensch. While the blog is from last year, and this year’s New Year has passed, we still have time to choose each day, and in each moment, to act consciously – to become more of the person we want to be.

These twelve steps challenged and motivated me to lead, and live, more like a mensch. I like the concept of outwardly acknowledging and appreciating others, getting rid of my grudges, and spending more time in “beginner’s mind.” Check out the blog. It’s thought provoking and inspiring.
