Like every year, there will be a ton of articles written over the next few days about why New Year’s Resolutions don’t work and why you shouldn’t make them. Yes, there are tons of stats about resolutions that are never achieved and that are forgotten a few weeks (or days, even) into the new year. However, New Year’s resolutions in and of themselves are not a bad thing. In fact, I like making New Year’s resolutions, and I encourage you to set a few yourself.

Everyone has their own favorite indicators of the sorry state of our economy and the stress that it is causing. Some people point to empty restaurants in New York City, plunging condo prices in Miami, or lengthening unemployment lines. Others point to the growth in prescriptions for anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medications.

“You will never change your life until you change something you do daily.” Mike Murdock
We all have daily habits and rituals that are as much a part of who we are as breathing. You may have a morning routine or a nighttime ritual that you go through to get ready for the day or to bring closure to the day. Sometimes these habits can become so ingrained that you don’t even realize how important they are to you. They just become a part of daily life. Every once in awhile though, something happens to prevent you from practicing your routine and you become very conscious of it. Recently our coffeemaker stopped working and for about a week, (while I tried to find time to go to the store and buy a new one) I did not hear the whirr of grinding coffee beans, smell the aroma of coffee brewing, and have a freshly-brewed cup in the morning. I really missed that!

My clients never cease to inspire me – and each year, as the year draws to an end, I reflect on the lessons they have taught me. Here is what I learned in 2010:
- Nothing is more important than taking care of yourself – because if you don’t, you have nothing to give. Without the rest, exercise, space, reflection, food…whatever it is that fuels you, you are not able to lead, or take care of, others. As they say, “put your own oxygen mask on first.”

“You can’t cross a sea by merely staring into the water.” Rabindranath Tagore
We recently offered a program called Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone to a conference audience. We challenged them to get out of their own way and set their Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals (Author Jim Collins coined this term in his book, Good to Great) so that they could truly accomplish the things that mattered to them most.

With so many things to do and so little time to do it in, I decided to surf the internet for tips on reducing all of the stress we (and that may include you) put on ourselves this time of year. This list of six great tips published on The Huffington Post was the best of the lot. So, post these on your wall or fridge – and refer back as needed. Happy Holidays!

“Dance as if no one were watching. Sing as if no one were listening. And live each day as if it were your last.” Irish Proverb
Life is too short not to enjoy it. So often we are caught up in what needs to get done or what people will think of us. It’s not worth it. The truth is that any day on this earth might be your last – so why not make the most of each day that’s been gifted to you?

The other day I presented a few leadership tips to a group of small business owners and senior leaders of organizations. They all listened patiently, politely, and even with a great deal of engagement. A few even took copious notes – as if to remind themselves of the personal and professional changes they truly wanted to, and planned to, make. And then one extremely honest individual raised his hand.

“Nothing changes until you do.” Source Unknown
Clients ask us to help them change. Well, actually they usually ask us to help them change others, or circumstances, or their luck. And that change is impossible. Or at least it’s not the most effective focal point.

I suspect we are all guilty to some extent. Especially as we get older and think that time is no longer our ally. Sometimes I know the course I should take, examine the risk, reflect on past experiences and think of what others would say, think or do and deliberately choose another safer course. Thank you for this reminder.
You’re welcome! Yes, choosing the riskier path does require a reminder of how bold we can – and have – been, rather than focusing on what may not have worked in the past or on what others think.
Very true. A very timely little nudge. Thanks. I had to tweet about it @ebfmark
Thanks for the comment and the tweet, Mark. It’s so easy to forget that sometimes all we need to do is start…
